What is Mouth Guard?

A sport mouth guard is a protective device made of a rubber-like material, usually worn during any sport which can potentially damage the teeth. These include contact sports such as rugby, martial arts or also non contact sports such as mountain biking.

Why it is important to use Mouth Guard for Kids and Adults?

  • Kids may have a mixture of baby and adult teeth, both of which are important for the development of healthy adult teeth. If kids lose a baby tooth prematurely due to dental trauma whilst playing sport, this may lead to extraction. The tooth space then being taken over by adjacent teeth, such that the adult replacement tooth will struggle to fit into the space, and lead to teeth crowding.
  • Adults have only 1 set of teeth for their entire life. A damaged tooth means ongoing repair and maintenance of that tooth. A tooth which is severely damaged may need to be extracted and need to be replaced by a dental implant.
  • A simple sport mouth guard will be able to minimise the potential damage to teeth whilst playing sport.
